Dragon Seer's Gift: A Tour of St. John's
This view of St. John's harbour was taken from The Rooms. If you look carefully, you can see the reflection of the front window
on the left hand side of the photo.
St. John's, the capitol city of Newfoundland and Labrador, has been my
home for over thirty years. With its colourful wooden houses and
sheltered harbour, St. John's is unlike any other city. Two of my
previous books, Catch Me Once, Catch Me Twice and Make or Break Spring,
were set in St. John's during World War II, but this is the first book
I've set in my own neighbourhood, in the present. (Actually, Dragon Seer's Gift takes place a few years ago, around 2005.)
It was fun to set a book so close to home. I'm afraid this book may
make St. John's seem very small, because Gwyn and Maddie live just a
few blocks from almost all the settings in the book--their schools,
Rooms, the Colonial building where the Mews Annex is located, and
the Kirk. Even Quidi Vidi Lake, where Gwyn likes to walk, is only about
minutes away by foot. In fact, St. John's is home to over
100,000 people. But, when you live downtown, it's easy to spend most of
your time in the same small area. So let's start with my neighbourhood.
