The Rooms

The Rooms

The Rooms houses the provincial art gallery, museum and archives in St. John's, Newfoundland. You can find out more by visiting The Rooms offical website. The Rooms also has a lovely cafe with a view of the harbour. It's crowded in summer time, but a great place to have lunch in winter.

annual Mummer's parade ending at The Rooms

The Rooms is also a hub of events and activities. I took this photo during the annual Mummers' Parade in 2011. If you're wondering what a Mummer is, here's the website that explains about our annual Mummers Festival.  You can also watch a video of the 2011 parade as it moves from Bishop Feild School through my neighbourhood to The Rooms. Mummering is part of an old English house visiting Christmas tradition that was carried on in Newfoundland and Labrador. It's something like a cross between Hallow'een and Christmas with music and dancing and treats.

Newfoundlanders love a joke and some of the mummer's costumes are laugh out loud funny. Can you guess what this mummer is dressed as?
A mummer.

If you watched the video about the Mummer's Parade, you saw them walk through Bannerman Park, so let's make that our next stop.
