2. Many places in Newfoundland were named Seal Cove. When
many places have the same name, delivering the mail can be very confusing.
At the end of the 19th century (the 1800s) the Post Master General of Newfoundland
could change the name of any community if there was more than one place with
the same name. How many places can you find in Newfoundland with the name
Seal Cove? Look on a map. You can also look in the Encyclopedia of
Newfoundland and Labrador.
Have any of the places named Seal Cove changed their names in the past?
3. Why do you think so many places were called Seal Cove? Why do you think someone might have called a place Quinter Cove?
4. Has the name of the place where you live ever changed? If so, why did it change and when? Who picked the new name?
5. If you had to make up a new name for the place where you live, what would it be? Why?
